This
is the scene of the project. Here is the base waterwall overlooking
the swimming pool. The water will cascade into a basin and
then be recirculated. Our project will involve a mosaic veneer
on the face of the wall and the two sides as well as the basin
perimeter. Our mosaic work will cover close to 500 square
feet of area.

In
this photo Saundra and Tom have been digitally inserted along
with the artist rendering to give you an idea of the scale
of the project. The main waterwall is 14 feet high and 30
feet wide.

Here is one
of the beginning steps, breaking up the square tiles into
irregular shapes with a hammer. Not quite what John envisioned
in his retirement. However, he quickly found a more upright
way to break up the tiles.

While most of
the mosaic work will be in broken up porcelain tiles, we wanted
to incorporate some design elements in fused glass. Here are
a couple of seagulls and a sandpiper (above) and some more
sandpipers below.

We constructed
a full scale rendering on brown construction paper. Our plan
was to put two tables together end to end and then work the
mosaic design from the left to the right.
Here is a fused glass piece that we submitted to our client
as our suggestion for the turtle coloring.

We started with the mosaic work for the basin area. Here
is Alex (above) and Heather (below) working on the shades
of blue water.

Here Heather and Alex are working on the red umbrella.

Now we are starting to see some real progress as we completed
our first 3' x 14' section. We are setting the tiles dry and
then capturing them by carefully laying a clear tile tape
over the top. We next cut out sections to manageable sizes
and mark label them so we will know where they fit upon re-assembly
of the big jigsaw puzzle.

Another
section completed. You can see how some of the glass design
elements (sandpipers, umbrella pole, shore line, sea oats,
fencing) are surrounded by the irregular mosaic tiles.

Here
you can see how nice the seagulls look in the mosaic sky.

And
now "Introducing the Migrating Turtles"

I think a piece is out of place!

Another section completed.

Here we have the completed and labeled sections carefully
stacked on a table. This is going to be one gigantic jigsaw
puzzle.

Ya gotta start somewhere so we decided on top left

Good progress with the seagulls in flight and the sea oats

Umbrellas and turtles. Did you happen to notice that the
sky is now clear (no clouds)?

Here is an elevated side view - note how we wrapped the design
around the corner

How peaceful is this?

Day four progress - lot's of turtles and tape plus the beginnings
of some water.

wall

End of day four - both turtles in the pool

Ahoy!!!! Now this is what I was talking about!! The pool
if filled with water, water is cascading down the waterwall
and landscaping has been added.
